There are many more homeopathic medicines that may be of use, but for this article’s purpose I am focusing on those well-known remedies that have a long history of use and benefit.) Great Flu Remedy! This is a well-known homeopathic medicine to practitioners and consumers. Gelsemium sempervirens is the Latin or scientific name for Yellow Jasmine or Carolina Jessamine, a plant native to the southern states of the US. It is the official state flower of South Carolina, and is featured on the SC state quarter (coin). It is an early flowering climbing vine. I’m featuring it this month as it is in bloom in the Carolinas, its vines covered with bright yellow trumpet-shaped flowers that emit an incredible scent. All parts of the plant are toxic to humans & livestock, although some bees, moths & butterflies feed on its nectar.
The homeopathic pharmaceutical process (standardized sequential dilution & succussion) removes the toxic aspect and results in a therapeutic remedy. The first development of the homeopathic medicine was in the 1850s homeopathic provings, and a monograph published in 1862 by Dr. E. M. Hale. Over the decades, homeopathic Gelsemium (Gels.) has been a premier curative remedy during Influenza epidemics. The characteristic symptoms of those needing Gelsemium (aka the keynote symptoms of the remedy) are: weakness, lassitude, fatigue, aching, soreness, dullness, heaviness, dizziness, drowsiness, intense weariness, trembling, muscular weakness, tremors, paralysis. The sick person will be chilly, apathetic, sluggish, sleepy, listless, appear congested & slightly flushed, and with heavy-lidded eyelids. It is for a flu that has a somewhat slow onset. Gels. covers many of the other common flu symptoms (headache, cough, fever, nose, ear & throat symptoms) but the sick person should have several of the keynote symptoms, as well. This remedy has also been beneficial for those ‘Never well since influenza’. There are other uses for Gels. This includes ‘Anxiety from Anticipation’: stage fright, fear of flying, fear of doctors & the dentist, fear of taking exams. These folks will have trembling, fatigue, irritability, sensitivity. Gels. is also used for ill effects from grief, fright, sudden bad news. Homeopathic remedies for acute conditions are commonly taken in potencies of 30X, 6C, 30C. These are the potencies usually available in US stores and in homeopathic remedy kits. Sources: Hale’s New Remedies, Homeopathic Drug Pictures by M.L.
